Eswatini's Report to the United Nations Special Rapporteur provides an overview of the government's understanding of and response to vulnerability to human trafficking for forced labour and commercial sexual exploitation, in the context of climate change.
Eswatini
Climate change and extreme weather events – such as cyclone Eloise – lead to the loss of housing, and increased displacement and unemployment in Eswatini.
This situation increases people’s vulnerability to human trafficking and forced labour, including forced commercial sexual exploitation.
According to government reports, following the cyclone, Eswatini and the IOM launched an awareness campaign about human trafficking and migrant smuggling, targeting communities at the grassroots level and traditional leaders. The government is also working to building the capacity of different stakeholders to counter human trafficking.
